Shipping plays a significant role in the transport sector in India’s economy. India’s merchant shipping fleet ranks 16th in the world.
Shipping Corporation of India (SCI): Established on 2nd October 1961, SCI become a Public Limited Entity on 18th September 1992 and was subsequently conferred ‘Minin Ratna’ status on 24th February 2000. 
SCI in India is a pioneer for:
(i) STS Operation for crude PDL and dry cargoes
(ii) Cryogenic Operations (LNG/LPG)
(iii) Joint ventures and other type of collaborations in Shipping

    India with a coastline of 7500 km, has 12 major ports which are directly under Government of India’s administration. There are about 184 minor and intermediate ports in the country.

(a) About 95% of India’s trade volume (68% in terms of value) is moved by sea.
(b) Indian merchant shipping fleet ranks 16th in the world is the largest among the developing countries.
(c) Average age of Indian merchant shipping fleet 18.03 years only.
(d) The 7517 km long Indian coastal is studded with 13 major ports and 200 non major ports.
(e) The strengthened aids to navigation consists of 1 lightship, 178 lighthouses, 64 Recons, 21 Deep Sea Lighted Buoys, 22 Wreck Marking Buoys and 23 Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS)
